👥 Grammar A2-11: Possessives

The eleventh material of the Fleydo A2 grammar series, for learners of about eight to twelve who already met the possessive ’s at A1 and now have to place it correctly. The lesson treats the apostrophe as a carrier of meaning rather than a decoration: the girl’s room and the girls’ room describe two different families, so the writer must count owners before touching the ending. A four-step procedure — who owns it, one owner or more, does that word already end in -s, read it back — is set out as a decision list and then walked through two fully worked examples, one regular plural and one irregular. A side-by-side comparison separates the plural -s that only counts people from the possessive mark that says something belongs to them, with a verdict the learner can apply on their own: look at the word straight after. Thirty multiple-choice items in four sets, a ten-card sorting task on where the mark goes, six reveal cards, six error corrections and three trap boxes cover girls’, children’s, men’s, women’s, babies’, buses’ and the s’s error. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, a moving-apostrophe board move, the diagnosis for a stuck learner and the Cambridge A2 Key relevance.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Singular owner + ’s: the girl’s room, the child’s coat, Hana’s drum
  • Plural owner already ending in -s takes the mark only: the girls’ room, the buses’ doors
  • Irregular plurals with no -s take a full ’s: the children’s books, the men’s team, the people’s seats
  • A plural that owns nothing takes no apostrophe: my friends are here, not my friend’s are here
  • Never s’s after a plural -s: the girls’ room, never the girls’s room
  • A singular name ending in -s is still singular: Tomas’s ticket
