❓ Grammar A2-2: Wh-questions in the past

The second material of the Fleydo A2 grammar series, for learners of about eight to twelve who can already tell a simple past story and now have to ask about one. It teaches the two question shapes side by side: the question word plus did plus the person plus a plain verb, and the question word plus was or were, which needs no helper at all because the verb be moves to the front by itself. The learner is given a four-step procedure — name the missing piece, say the expected answer, look at its verb, read the question back — and then three worked examples that run through it, including the case where the question word is itself the person doing the action, so did disappears. Practice is spread across five blocks: eight warm-up items, eight on the did against was or were decision, a tapped interview, eight items inside real conversations, a ten-strip sorting task, six repairs and an eight-item unhinted test with a scored result band. Every answer explains its reason, never only its verdict. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, a two-box board move, the finger technique for a stuck learner and the Cambridge A2 Key relevance.

  • question word + did + subject + plain verb + ?
  • question word + was / were + subject + the rest + ?
  • did carries the past, so the verb behind it never does
  • was for I / he / she / it, were for you / we / they
  • Never did and was in the same question
  • Who or What as the doer takes the past verb alone: Who broke it?
