📖 Lesson B1 Grammar📐 Grammar

⚖️ Grammar B1-10: Comparison: extended

The tenth material of the Fleydo B1 grammar series. Where A2 taught learners to say that one thing beats another, this material teaches them to say by how much. The toolbox opens with the as … as frame for a zero gap and its softened forms — not as … as and not quite as … as — then adds the downward direction with less … than and the least, and finally the modifiers that size the gap: much, far and a lot against a bit and slightly. A gap ladder maps the size of the difference to the right tool, a four-question decision procedure starts from what the speaker wants to say, and three worked runs turn phone-club facts into finished sentences. The heart of the lesson is a compare-and-verdict on one ten-euro fact spoken in three voices — not as expensive as, cheaper than, less expensive than — the same price, three different feelings. A tap-and-explain review of two phones for the school blog shows ten choices working in real prose. Practice runs to thirty-one multiple-choice items in four sets, every answer explained, plus ten review phrases to sort by gap size, six authentic errors to repair and four traps that survive into B2: the comparative inside the frame, the doubled comparative, swapped as / than partners, and traded partner words. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the line-on-the-board move, the partner-check rescue for stuck learners and the Cambridge B1 Preliminary relevance.

view_agenda Lesson Plan

  • B1 comparison asks a sharper question than A2: by how much?
  • The gap ladder as a pattern strip: just as fast → not quite as fast → a bit slower → much slower
  • One ten-euro fact written four ways — the grammar changes what the reader feels, not the price

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • as + base adjective + as for equality: as light as, just as sharp as — never a comparative inside the frame
  • not as … as and not quite as … as: a difference said gently, keeping the other thing as the measuring stick
  • less + adjective + than for two things; the least + adjective for the bottom of a group of three or more
  • much / far / a lot + comparative for big gaps; a bit / slightly + comparative for small ones — never “more” before a comparative
  • Partner words never trade: the same as, similar to, different from; as closes as, than follows comparatives
  • less prefers long adjectives — for short ones English uses not as … as or the opposite comparative
