📖 Lesson B2 Speaking🎓 Education

🗳️ Horizon: The First Formal Debate

The debate module’s task lesson. Learners run the complete formal format with all roles — proposition, opposition, chair, timekeeper — using signposted openings, acknowledge-and-counter rebuttals and no-new-argument summaries. In the story, Marco concedes his way to victory, Sam’s “suggests, not proves” attack lands, and a phone ban almost nobody wanted wins nine votes to seven because the audience votes on arguments, not popularity. Homework: steel-man the other side.

  • Signposting discourse: Firstly / Furthermore / In summary / For all these reasons, we ask for your vote
  • Concession + counter: That may be true; however, the evidence shows… — a semicolon or full stop before however, a comma after it
  • Claim–reason–evidence frames: We claim that… because…, and according to + source, …
  • Debate-format conventions as discourse rules: the proposition speaks first, and summaries may contain no new arguments
