Two photographs of the same wall — one finished mural, one painter mid-chaos — teach the choice between the present perfect simple and continuous. Learners interrogate sentences with four quick questions (How many? How long? Is the side-effect visible? Is it a state verb?), play the defence game and the sorting race, send the same verb down both roads, and learn the fine print: the continuous sounds unfinished, the simple stamps things complete, and you never count with the continuous.

- Present perfect continuous reports the activity and its duration: I’ve been writing all morning
- Never count with the continuous — a number in the sentence calls for the simple
- The continuous often implies unfinished action (I’ve been reading that novel), while the simple implies completion (I’ve read it)
- State verbs (know, own, love) take the perfect simple even with for and since: I’ve owned this bike for two years
