📌 Grammar A1-31: Adverbs of time and place

The closing material of the Fleydo A1 grammar series, written for learners of about seven to ten. It splits the adverbs into the two families a child can actually sort — when words (now, today, tonight, tomorrow, yesterday) and where words (here, there, outside, inside, upstairs, downstairs) — and then drills the two things that really go wrong. First, position: these words wait at the end of the sentence, so it is “I am reading a book here”, never “I here am reading a book”; a note adds the order when both appear, where before when. Second, the small word in front: “on today”, “to here” and “in outside” are shown against the sentences that are right, with a reminder that in, on and at still belong to “on Monday” and “at six o’clock”. Practice is spread over five multiple-choice sets, a ten-word sorting task, nine tap-and-repeat cards and six sentences to repair, and every single answer explains itself in language simpler than the grammar being taught. The teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the arrow board move, help for a stuck learner, and — as this is the last A1 topic — the handover to level A2.

  • When words: now, today, tonight, tomorrow, yesterday
  • Where words: here, there, outside, inside, upstairs, downstairs
  • The word goes at the end: I am reading a book here.
  • It never jumps in front of the verb: not “I here am reading”
  • No in / on / at / to in front: today (not “on today”), here (not “to here”)
  • Both together — where first, then when: We played outside yesterday.
