📖 Lesson B2 Grammar📐 Grammar

🔑 Grammar B2-20: Conditional alternatives

The B2 material that turns eight conditional words into four attitudes. It opens by refusing to teach them as vocabulary: unless, as long as, provided that, in case, whether or not, even if, otherwise and supposing are eight ways of standing towards the same possibility, and the attitude map table groups them by what the listener hears rather than by what the clause looks like. Unless is revised at speed — if… not, with the negative already on board — and the demanding family is taught as a register ladder, from as long as at the kitchen table through providing and provided that to on condition that in a permit letter, with the duration-or-condition ambiguity of as long as you like set beside as long as you help. The heart of the material is in case against if, built as a compare and verdict on the umbrella pair: take an umbrella in case it rains means take it now, while the sky is still undecided, whereas take an umbrella if it rains waits for the rain to arrive first. The order of events is the test, and six items drill nothing else, including in case of plus a noun and the past-tense precaution. A second table covers indifference (whether or not, even if, and the even though trap), the threat that otherwise spells out, and the imagine-if openers suppose and supposing; a four-question decision list and a worked run then convert one plain if sentence about Kasper and a dive waiver into a demand, a precaution and a threat without changing a single fact. Sonja’s 150-word Sarnfell expedition briefing carries ten tappable choices. Practice runs to thirty explained multiple-choice items in four sets, twelve fragments sorted into real conditions against precautions and shrugs, six reveal cards, six repairs and four traps. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the time-arrow board move, the am-I-holding-the-umbrella-yet rescue, and Cambridge B2 First relevance.

  • Eight words, four attitudes: a price, a precaution, a shrug, a threat

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • unless = if… not, with the negative already inside: Unless the ice clears, we drill downstream — never unless it doesn’t clear
  • the demanding family means if and only if and rises in register: as long as · providing · provided that · on condition that
  • in case is a precaution, not a condition: the action happens first, and in case of takes a noun — never in case it will rain
  • whether or not and even if declare the condition irrelevant; even though states a fact instead of a possibility
  • otherwise introduces a full main clause, so it is the one word here that takes will: Hurry — otherwise we’ll miss it
  • present tense inside every condition clause however far into the future it points; will stays in the result half
