📖 Lesson B1 Grammar📐 Grammar

🪢 Grammar B1-33: Verb patterns: extended

The B1.2 material where the person pattern grows up. The squad of verbs that put a person between themselves and the to-infinitive fills out — would like, expect, persuade, encourage, order, advise, get, and warn with its negative (warned her not to open the top oven) — and then the two thieves arrive: make and let, the only everyday verbs that take the same person and snatch the to away. Make is force and caused feelings — the coach made us run, that film made the whole row cry — while let is permission from a named giver: Mum let me stay up, won’t let anyone touch her camera. A machinery table walks statements, negatives, questions and the passive, where the whole game reverses: make hands the to back (we were made to wait) and let simply vanishes, because it has no passive at all — be allowed to does that job, and it also speaks whenever the permission comes from a rule rather than a person: nobody under sixteen is allowed to use the slicer. Two compare-and-verdict pairs carry the meaning: made her stay against let her stay (one shape, opposite doors), and let against be allowed to (same permission, two cameras). Help, the one flexible verb, takes both forms. A 125-word bakery diary shows every choice in the wild, each phrase tappable. Practice runs to 31 explained multiple-choice items in four sets, twelve verb-plus-person chunks to sort, six real learner repairs, and three traps: made me to apologise, allow us wear, and we were let stay. Teacher notes carry the 45-minute sequence, the TO-card board move, and Cambridge B1 Preliminary relevance.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • verb + object + to-infinitive, extended: want / ask / tell / would like / expect / persuade / encourage / order / advise / get someone to do; warn someone not to do
  • make + object + bare infinitive — force and caused reactions: the coach made us run, onions make me cry
  • let + object + bare infinitive — permission from a named giver: Mum let me go; the negative changes nothing — won’t let you copy
  • allow keeps its to in every sentence: allowed us to film; be allowed to speaks for rules and serves as let’s passive: we were allowed to stay
  • the passive returns make’s to: we were made to wait; help takes both — helped me (to) carry
