📖 Lesson A1 Grammar📐 Grammar

📍 Grammar A1-23: Prepositions of place

The place words of A1, taught from one picture instead of seven. The material builds a single room — a desk, a box and a cat called Pepper — and then moves only the cat, so the learner sees in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of and between as seven positions of the same thing rather than seven unrelated words. Behind and in front of are shown by what hides what, which is the only cue a young learner can read reliably. The two words that really cause trouble get a section of their own: between, which is impossible with one thing, and in front of, which loses its of in almost every beginner's writing. Practice runs across four scored sets (seven easy items, six on the tricky pair, seven in short contexts and a six-item test), a ten-card right-or-wrong sorter, a tappable room description and six sentences to repair. Every answer explains itself in words simpler than the grammar being taught. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the one-pen board move that replaces seven drawings, and what to do with a learner who is stuck.

  • in = inside · on = touching the top or a wall · under = below
  • next to = right beside one thing; between = in the middle of two things
  • in front of is three words and never loses of; its opposite is behind
