📖 Lesson B2 Vocabulary💻 Technology

📈 Horizon: Describing Data & Trends

Second lesson of the science module. Learners build the full toolkit of trend language: verbs for every direction (rise, climb, soar; fall, decline, plummet; remain steady; peak; fluctuate), adverb–adjective pairs (sharply / a sharp rise) with the noun-phrase transformation, time framing, and the preposition compass — rose to a level, rose by an amount, a rise in the thing measured, peaked at the top. In the story, Coach Deniz pins up three unlabelled mystery graphs, retires the verb “go up” with a wanted poster, and the reveals include the canteen’s hot-chocolate winter, the group chat’s deadline heartbeat and the cliff-shaped end of Sam’s screen time.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Rise is intransitive and irregular (rise–rose–risen): prices rose; raise is transitive: the shop raised prices — “prices raised” is wrong
  • Trend adverbs follow the verb (fell sharply); before a noun the adverb becomes an adjective: a sharp fall, a gradual increase
  • The noun-phrase transformation: Sales rose sharply = There was a sharp rise in sales
  • Preposition system with numbers: rose to 90 (final level), rose by 30 (size of change), a rise in sales (thing measured), peaked at 120 (level reached)
  • Time framing for trends: between January and April, from September to December, over the summer
