📣 Horizon: The Story Slam

Slam night at the studio. The rubric goes up like a law — orchestra, peak, delivery, landing, five points each — and performance order comes out of a bicycle helmet. Learners study the two-minute architecture (past-continuous hook, past-simple engine, one past-perfect flashback, one engineered peak, a rehearsed landing line), master the four delivery dials of pause, volume, gesture and eye contact, and learn the rescue move for a blank mind. Then they polish, rehearse, perform without paper, and judge each other with praise that names a technique.

  • Telling vs performing
  • Boring stories about amazing events
  • What should a judge reward?

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • The slam hook uses past continuous to freeze a scene while one strange detail raises a question (It was raining sideways, and I was standing outside the wrong house…)
  • The story engine runs on past simple — one action per beat drives the plot forward
  • Exactly one flashback line built on had + past participle drops the backstory without stopping the engine (My cousin had moved house twice that year)
  • The suspense peak keeps the s45 toolkit: shrinking sentences, one impossible detail, a two-second pause before the reveal
  • Landing lines close the loop with the hook and are rehearsed word-perfect
