🏺 Horizon: Reading — The Discovery Report
The studio becomes a newsroom. Coach Deniz projects a shipwreck headline, the crew predicts the report before reading it, then mines its passive machinery: past, perfect and continuous passives plus the distancing patterns it is believed that… and is believed to have sunk. The lesson closes with the three-line summary discipline — the find, the belief, the future — practised until every word pays rent.
Lesson Plan
- Where passives live
- Headline prediction game
- Why the finder disappears
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- Passive voice across tenses: was discovered (past simple), have been recovered (present perfect), are being cleaned (present continuous), will be displayed (future)
- Distancing passive pattern 1: It is believed / thought / said + that-clause
- Distancing passive pattern 2: subject + is believed + to be (present) / to have + past participle (earlier past)
- The by-agent appears only when it carries real information; otherwise reports drop it
