🔍 Grammar B1-26: Modal perfects
The material where B1 grammar first turns round and argues with the past. The opening scene is a silent bus home: Leon’s five-a-side team missed the 9:15 train, arrived at the county final with no warm-up and lost 3–2 — and every sentence anyone wants to say about it needs the same frame, modal + have + past participle, a time machine pointed at a finished moment. A jobs table gives each modal perfect its role in one line: should have for the right move that was missed, shouldn’t have for the wrong one that was made, could have for the chance nobody took, would have for willingness in a past that never happened, and may / might have for a guess. A four-question decision list — is the moment over? was there a better move? chance or willingness? are you sure? — runs through two worked examples, and the compare-and-verdict pair holds should have caught and could have caught the same train against each other: blame against missed chance, with a note on the reproachful You could have told me!
