- Non-defining relative clauses take commas and which: Sleep, which nobody thinks of as a skill, decides half your marks — that cannot follow a comma
- Passive voice = be + past participle (The data was collected) to keep the spotlight on the result rather than the doer
- Third conditional for past-time hypotheticals: if + past perfect in the if-clause (If the school had banned phones in 2020, this talk would not exist)
- Lexical upgrading: very + weak adjective is replaced by one strong adjective (very surprising → startling); nice/good/thing are replaced by exact nouns or vivid detail
- Register pairing: phrasal verbs have formal twins for talk register (find out → discover, go up → increase, look into → investigate, talk about → discuss)
