🌊 Horizon: Listening — The Wonder Talk
Fourth lesson of the science module. Learners train the note-taker’s craft on a three-minute wonder talk — why is the sea salty? Keyword notes (content words, numbers, arrows, fifteen words maximum), the speaker’s signposts (The key reason is…, which in turn…, As a result…, And here’s a number for you…), and reconstruction grammar that unpacks every arrow into a causal connector. In the story the crew’s four note pages go on gallery display: Sam’s one magnificent unfinished sentence, Marco’s unreadable “slt +?H2O”, and Priya’s fourteen keywords that pass the only test that matters — whether tomorrow-you can rebuild the talk.

Grammar Points
- Keyword notes keep content words (nouns, verbs, numbers) and drop grammar words — articles, auxiliaries and prepositions are grown back at reconstruction
- Reconstruction unpacks note arrows into causal connectors: rain + CO₂ → acidic becomes Because rain absorbs carbon dioxide as it falls, it becomes slightly acidic
- Chain connectors link an explanation across sentences: because, which in turn, as a result, this is why
- Signpost phrases are fixed formulas that predict discourse structure: The key reason is… announces a cause; As a result… announces a consequence
- Approximate numbers are flagged with approximately / ≈: sea water is approximately 3.5 per cent salt
