📖 Lesson B2 Speaking📐 Grammar

🎛️ Horizon: The 2-vs-3 Switchboard

Coach Deniz brings a 1970s telephone switchboard to the studio and turns conditional choice into operator work. Learners read the two coordinates of every hypothetical question — time and reality — place answers on the chalk grid (now vs back then), drill switch conversations that jump timelines on cue, and repair the classic faults: would in the if-clause, past anchors with cond-2 machinery, and half-finished switches. The exit ticket is one topic spoken on both machines: a second and a third conditional about the same subject.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Conditional selection by coordinates: imagined + present/future → second conditional; imagined + finished past → third conditional
  • Second conditional form: if + past simple, would + base verb (If I ran the studio, I would ban Monday rehearsals)
  • Third conditional form: if + past perfect, would have + past participle (If we had rehearsed, we would have been ready)
  • Switch phrases flag a timeline jump: These days…, But back then…, Looking back…, If it happened again…
  • Classic faults and repairs: would in the if-clause; a past time word with cond-2 machinery; half-finished switches (had trained → would have won, not would win)
  • After if, subjunctive were (If I were captain) sounds sharper than was in careful speech
