🏊 Grammar A2-27: Gerund as subject

The twenty-seventh material of the Fleydo A2 grammar series. It teaches one small pattern properly: an activity can be the subject of a sentence, once the verb takes -ing. The whole lesson is built on a single move — the -ing word is standing exactly where football or my brother would stand, so it behaves exactly like them and takes a singular verb. Swimming is fun, never Swimming are fun. A four-step procedure names the activity, collects the words that belong to it, runs a swap test and only then chooses the verb, and three worked examples walk whole sentences through it, ending in Swimming is good for your back, Riding a bike to school is cheaper than the bus and Not sleeping enough makes you tired. A compare-and-verdict pair puts Swimming is fun beside I like swimming — the same word doing two different jobs — and resolves it by asking what stands in front of the -ing word. Longer subjects get their own section, so that Eating vegetables is good for you and Getting up early isn’t easy stop losing their verb to the plural noun sitting next to it.
