📖 Lesson A2 Grammar📐 Grammar

📈 Grammar A2-7: Comparatives and superlatives: consolidation

A1 introduced -er and -est; this material makes them safe. Learners get a four-question procedure instead of a feeling: two things or a whole group, how many beats the word has, whether it is one of the three rebels (good, bad, far), and the one-change check. The full spelling table is here — just add the tail, add only r or st after -e, double the last letter after one vowel plus one consonant, turn y into i — together with the two errors that outlive A1: the double comparative (more bigger) and the superlative that has lost its the (busiest day). Thirty multiple-choice items, a twelve-word beat sorter, six reveal cards on the irregulars, six error corrections and a school-magazine text where every comparative and superlative explains its own choice.

  • Comparative of short adjectives: adjective + -er + than (quicker than, wider than).
  • Comparative of longer adjectives: more + adjective + than (more crowded than, more comfortable than).
  • Superlative: the + adjective + -est, or the most + adjective, followed by in a place or of a number.
  • Spelling before the tail: -e takes only -r / -st, one vowel + one consonant doubles, -y becomes -i.
  • Irregular forms: good / better / the best, bad / worse / the worst, far / further / the furthest.
  • One change only: an adjective never takes both more and -er, and a superlative never loses the.
