📖 Lesson A2 Grammar📐 Grammar

📆 Grammar A2-3: Past time expressions

A past sentence is not finished until it says when, and this material teaches the four everyday ways of saying it. It starts from a timeline that places in 2018, last summer, three days ago and yesterday against NOW, then sets out every family in one table with the preposition each one wants. The centre of the material is a four-question procedure the learner can run on any phrase — counted period, last, calendar point, position in the sentence — worked through three times on real sentences before any practice begins. Thirty multiple-choice items in four sets, a twelve-phrase sorting task on the preposition decision itself, six typical errors to repair and three traps drill the pattern rules that learners actually break: ago follows the period and never leads it, last takes nothing in front, and a year always takes in. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the board move that fixes the last-Monday error for good, and what to give a stuck learner.

  • yesterday, and yesterday + morning / afternoon / evening — used bare
  • in + year, month, season or decade; on + day or date; at + clock time
  • last, this and next replace the preposition: on Monday but last Monday
  • The time phrase sits at the end of the sentence, or at the front with a comma
