🐾 Grammar A1-6: Nouns: singular and plural

The plural material of the Fleydo A1 grammar series, written for learners of about seven to ten. It builds the plural from sound outwards: first the picture of dog + s = dogs, then a four-row table of the spelling groups — plain -s, es after a hissy or shushy ending (s, x, ch, sh), a letter + y turning into ies, and f or fe turning into ves — with the y trap spelled out in full (boys, days, keys against babies, cities, stories). Ten tap-and-repeat cards let learners hear the extra bit at the end of bus-es and box-es before they ever write it. Practice is spread across four blocks: eight easy one-word items, a ten-word sorting task that separates -s from -es by ear, eight harder items inside real sentences, and six unhinted test items with a scored result. A whole section is given to the nine odd words a child meets every week — man, woman, child, foot, tooth, mouse, person, fish, sheep — as a table plus a picture set, because they are vocabulary and not a rule. Every answer explains itself in language simpler than the grammar being taught. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the four-column board move, the say-it-before-you-spell-it rule and the follow-up topics.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Most nouns just take a small s: one dog, two dogs
  • Words ending in s, x, ch or sh take es: box → boxes, watch → watches
  • A letter + y becomes ies: baby → babies — but a, e, o, u + y only takes s: boys, keys
  • Words ending in f or fe become ves: leaf → leaves, knife → knives
  • Odd ones to learn by heart: man–men, woman–women, child–children, foot–feet, tooth–teeth, mouse–mice, person–people
  • Fish and sheep never change, and a / an never sits next to a plural
