📖 Lesson B2 Speaking🌍 World Around Us

📡 Horizon: The Newsroom

The studio becomes a newsroom for the Register expedition’s task day. Teams take one story — the great hamster escape — and produce it three ways: a formal report with full forms, passives and formal twins; a neutral news piece with a clean headline, attribution and unloaded lexis; and a friend-chat version with contractions and slang. Cross-team audits hunt register mismatches, framing words get swapped for facts, and the closing broadcast is voted on for register accuracy, not laughs.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Formal register uses full forms (did not, had not); a single contraction breaks it
  • Formal twins replace phrasal verbs in formal writing: put off → postpone, look into → investigate, find out → discover
  • Impersonal passives (It was reported that…, The matter is being investigated) create formal distance
  • Neutral news keeps attribution (according to…) and factual lexis; loaded words like chaos are framing, not information
  • Informal register licenses contractions, phrasal verbs, ellipsis and group slang matched to a known audience
