📔 Horizon: Reading — The Training Diary
Coach Deniz hands out the real training diary of Leyla, a fifteen-year-old open-water swimmer, plus green and orange highlighters. Learners read for gist, then decode: have + past participle verbs become countable dots, have been + -ing verbs become lines still in motion, and dated moments drop into past simple. They map duration signals (for, since, so far, still, already, lately), plot week seven on a duration line, and finish by writing a decodable diary page about their own progress.
Lesson Plan
- Your own logs and streaks
- A personal best you are proud of
- Evidence of progress
- Which line helps the coach more?
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- Present perfect simple reads as a countable dot, often totalled with so far: I’ve swum 42 kilometres so far
- Present perfect continuous reads as a line still running: I’ve been working on my pace all month
- Negative perfect simple + for measures the gap since the last success: I haven’t beaten my personal best for three weeks
- for + period gives the length of the line; since + point gives its start: for six weeks / since the season started
- Naming a finished day moves the verb to past simple: On Saturday I swam my first open-water race
