📖 Lesson B1 Grammar📐 Grammar

🚦 Grammar B1-8: First conditional: consolidation

The consolidation material for the first conditional, built on what A2-30 installed: if + present, will + plain verb. That law is restated once, loudly — the condition half wears the present after if, unless and when, and will never enters it, not even hidden inside ’ll — and then the machine gets its B1 upgrades. Unless is taught as an if with the not already swallowed: a compare-and-verdict pair sets Unless you hurry against If you don’t hurry, a worked run converts an if…not sentence step by step, and the double negative — unless you don’t — is hunted through the practice, the repairs and the traps. A five-row table opens up the result half: will for confident predictions, might for chances, can for doors that open, should for advice, and the bare imperative for instructions, each with what it adds. A second compare draws the if / when line — when for events that are guaranteed with only their time unknown, if for events that may never happen — including the accidental promise of When I fail my test. A shapes table covers order and comma, negatives split between the halves (doesn’t in the condition, won’t in the result), questions and short answers. Jade’s 120-word message planning the class trip to Whitecliff carries fourteen tappable choices; practice runs to thirty-two explained multiple-choice items in four sets, twelve fragments sorted into condition half against result half, six real learner errors repaired, and three traps. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the door-and-menu board move, the unroll-the-not rescue, and Cambridge B1 Preliminary relevance.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • if / unless / when + present tense, never will: If it rains — even ’ll is banned from the condition half
  • unless = if… not, with the not already inside: Unless you hurry = If you don’t hurry — never Unless you don’t hurry
  • the result half offers five shapes: we’ll swim · we might be late · you can come · we should wait · take an umbrella
  • negatives split by half: doesn’t belongs to the condition, won’t to the result
  • if for a possible event, when for a certain one: If the film sells out vs When the bell rings
  • questions and short answers live in the result half: What will you do if it rains? — Yes, I will
