🍃 Grammar B2-26: Participle clauses

The B2 material that treats a participle clause as a full clause with its engine removed. It opens on the erasure itself — delete the connector, the subject and the tense from Because she felt tired and what survives is Feeling tired — and argues the point that makes the structure worth learning: this is a compression tool that lets a sentence open on a fact instead of on machinery, which is why reports, news openings and professional prose are built on it. Three forms are laid out in one table with the full clause behind each: the plain -ing for an action the subject is doing, simultaneously or causally; the -ed for an action the subject receives, because somebody else did it; and having plus past participle for an action that was finished first, with having been plus past participle for the passive version and not sitting in front of the whole clause. A four-question decision list makes the shared-subject question a gate rather than a preference, and two worked runs convert real sentences: three years of cataloguing become Having catalogued the harbour collection, and a vault sealed in 1890 becomes Sealed in 1890. The compare and verdict set the full clause against its own participle and price the trade — economy and flow bought with the explicit because, after or although, which the reader must now infer, so cause and time may shrink while contrast keeps its word. The dangling participle gets a section of its own: Walking home along the quay, the rain started is repaired twice in a worked run, and the mechanical test — read the first noun after the comma and ask whether it could really do the -ing — is drilled over six items, including the danglers that a passive main half hides. Practice runs to thirty-six explained multiple-choice items in five sets, twelve openers sorted into active and passive, six reveal cards, six repairs and four traps, closing with a scored eight-item test.
