📖 Lesson B1 Grammar📐 Grammar

🚀 Grammar B1-20: Phrasal verbs: extended

The B1 phrasal-verb material of the Fleydo grammar series, built on the A2 foundation and going three steps beyond it. Step one is a new working set of fourteen high-value verbs for plans, journeys, problems and hobbies — set off, take off, turn up, put off, carry on, run out of, get over, look up, sort out, work out, give up, take up, come across and break down — each with a plain-English meaning and a full example, plus the second meanings that make B1 reading tricky: a plan takes off, a friend turns up, a sum works out. Step two names the grammar that A2 only gestured at: separable verbs open in the middle and a pronoun object must use that opening (sort it out), while inseparable verbs are welded shut (get over it, come across it) — a formula, a four-question decision procedure and two worked runs make the distinction mechanical. The welded three-part family gets its own section: look forward to, get on with, put up with, run out of and catch up with never separate, and after their final preposition a verb wears -ing — looking forward to seeing you, the most-tested line in polite English. Step three is register: put off against postpone, carry on against continue, a text message set against a school letter, with a verdict on choosing the voice for the reader. A tap-and-explain story about a charity quiz night that goes wrong and gets rescued puts twelve of the verbs to work. Practice runs to thirty-six explained multiple-choice items across five sets, ten verbs to sort into opens-versus-welded, six real errors to repair and three traps. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, a card-rack board move, the stuck-learner rescue and the Cambridge B1 Preliminary relevance.

view_agenda Lesson Plan

  • A verb plus a small word makes a new verb you could not guess: set off = start a journey
  • The B1 step up: these fourteen run your plans — and some verbs open in the middle while some are welded shut
  • The one-word twins (postpone, continue, depart) exist, and the lesson says when each voice fits

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Separable phrasal verbs open in the middle: put off the match / put the match off
  • With a pronoun object a separable verb must open: put it off, never put off it
  • Inseparable phrasal verbs never split: get over it, come across it, run out of it
  • Three-part verbs keep both small words attached, and a following verb wears -ing: looking forward to seeing you
  • Some phrasal verbs take no object at all, so nothing can move: set off, turn up, break down, carry on
  • Register: many phrasal verbs have a formal one-word twin — put off / postpone, carry on / continue, set off / depart
