📖 Lesson A2 Grammar📐 Grammar

🌍 Grammar A2-21: Present perfect: introduction

A2 learners already own two verb forms — go and went — so the present perfect asks them to accept a third one, gone, that only ever appears behind have or has. This material builds the tense from that fact. It starts where the tense is easiest to feel: a library wall where everybody pins one thing they have done, with no dates on any card, because experience is the point and when is deliberately not. Learners meet the full form table with negatives, questions and short answers, a thirteen-verb table of all three forms, nine reveal cards that make them say the participle before they check it, and a four-step decision procedure run through three worked examples. Been and gone get a section of their own, resolved by one question — where is the person standing now? — and drilled with a ten-situation sorter and seven items. Thirty-one multiple-choice items, six error corrections and three trap boxes finish the job, and the fourth step of the procedure plants the rule that decides everything later: name a finished time and the sentence must switch to the past simple. No audio; English throughout.

  • Experience, not date: is this somewhere in your life?
  • The pattern strip: Zuri + has + ridden + a camel
  • The rule that waits at the end: name the day and the tense changes

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • subject + have / has + past participle for life experience, with no time named
  • has for he / she / it and any single person; have for I, you, we, they and any group
  • the third form of the verb: go / went / gone, see / saw / seen, eat / ate / eaten; regular verbs make forms two and three alike
  • negatives and questions without did: haven't seen, Has she ever ridden…?, Yes, I have / No, I haven't
  • ever asks and stands before the verb; never answers and already carries the no
  • been (went and came back, and the word experience always takes) vs gone (left and still away)
  • a named, finished time cancels the tense: the sentence switches to the past simple
