📖 Lesson B2 Speaking🌿 Nature

🧪 Horizon: The Experiment Report

Third lesson of the science module. Learners narrate a live mini-experiment — does temperature change how fast sugar dissolves? — using the fixed report skeleton: a testable hypothesis (If…, then…), a Method in the past passive with sequencers, observations in past simple with exact numbers, and a hedged causal conclusion (This suggests that… because…). In the story, Sam’s kitchen narration (“I chucked sugar in both”) is upgraded live into lab voice, Marco lobbies for the vinegar-and-baking-soda reaction, Aylin defends numbers over feelings, and Priya rescues the conclusion from “this proves warm water is magic”.

  • Watched versus observed: when English puts on a lab coat
  • Kitchen voice versus lab voice

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Method sections use the past passive — was/were + past participle: Two glasses were filled; the water was heated to 40 °C — never the bare verb (was heat ✗)
  • A testable hypothesis uses the first conditional: If + present simple, will + verb: If the water is warmer, the sugar will dissolve faster
  • Observations stay in past simple with exact numbers (The grains sat on the bottom for three minutes); interpretation is kept out of them
  • Honest conclusions hedge with present-tense reporting language: This suggests / appears to show that… because… — proves is reserved for repeated, sufficient evidence
  • Sequencers organise procedure: First, Next, Then, Finally
