📖 Lesson B2 Grammar📐 Grammar

🎯 Grammar B2-30: Articles and determiners: advanced

A B2 material that stops treating articles as a countability rule and starts treating them as meaning. It opens with the sentence pair that proves the point — Students work part-time versus The students work part-time — and then builds the lesson around function rather than a rule list. The flagship comparison sets the three ways English generalises side by side and refuses to call them interchangeable: Dogs are loyal (the everyday generic of speech and journalism), A dog is loyal (the definitional generic that breaks for properties only a whole class can have, as in A panda is becoming extinct), and The dog is a loyal animal (the formal species generic used for animals, inventions and instruments) — with a fourth panel showing that The dogs are loyal stops generalising and points. From there the material covers the + adjective as the name of a whole group (the rich are, never the riches, and a single member needs a real noun), the zero-article patterns that are memorised rather than derived (institutions used for their purpose against the building, meals, by + transport, times, abstract nouns, languages, subjects and place names, with the plural-form exceptions that keep the), and finally the definite article's real job: a promise that the reader can identify the thing, granted by earlier mention, shared context, uniqueness or a modifier that pins it. Designed against the errors that mark an unfinished B2 text — The life is hard, the breakfast, the next year, and dropping the in front of a superlative or an of-phrase.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • The three generics: zero article + plural / uncountable, a + singular, the + singular for species and inventions — and how each one breaks
  • the + plural is not a generic: it points at a set the reader can identify
  • the + adjective names a whole group of people (the rich, the elderly, the unemployed, the Dutch): plural verb, no -s, and a noun for one member
  • Zero-article patterns: institutions used for their purpose, meals, by + transport, times of day and year, abstract nouns in general, languages, subjects and most place names
  • Place names that keep the: plural or group names, ranges, rivers, seas and deserts (the Netherlands, the USA, the Alps, the Thames)
  • The four licences for the: earlier mention, shared context, uniqueness, a modifier that pins the noun — plus the automatic the before superlatives, ordinals and only / same
