📖 Lesson B2 Grammar📐 Grammar

⛰️ Grammar B2-15: Phrasal verbs: advanced

At B1 phrasal verbs were fourteen separate facts and a rule about where the object sits. At B2 that method runs out, because English has thousands of them and a learner meets new ones every week. This lesson replaces memorising with reading. It teaches the five workhorse particles as carriers of meaning — up as completely, on as continuing, out as into the open, off as departure or cancellation, down as onto the record — and then drills the transferable skill of guessing an unfamiliar phrasal verb from its particle and its sentence. On top of that it builds a working set of fourteen abstract B2 verbs, from fall through and turn out to come across as and get away with, and finishes with register: the one-word twin, and which reader wants which voice.

  • Why memorising lists stops working at B2
  • The particle is readable, the useful verbs are abstract, and every one has a twin
  • What is carried over from B1 and only re-tested here

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Particles as carriers of meaning: up = completely, on = continuing, out = to the end or into the open, off = departure or cancellation, down = onto the record or to a stop
  • Abstract senses of high-frequency phrasal verbs, and the second verb hidden inside come across and cut down
  • Register: the phrasal verb and its formal one-word twin, and keeping one voice through a whole text
  • Literal versus idiomatic readings of the same verb-plus-particle pair
  • Object placement: separable verbs, inseparable verbs and welded three-part verbs
  • Pattern differences that look alike: turn out to be versus end up plus a place or an -ing form
