📖 Lesson A2 Grammar📐 Grammar

🎯 Grammar A2-14: be going to: consolidation

A1-28 taught the three parts of be going to and used them for plans. This material consolidates that form and adds the second, equally common use: a prediction built on evidence the speaker can see, hear or smell at this very moment — look at those clouds, it is going to rain. Learners get a three-question procedure for deciding which job a sentence is doing, two fully worked examples, a side-by-side comparison with the present continuous (has the action started, or can you only see it coming?), a market scene where every form is tappable, a sorting task on the reason behind each sentence, error correction and a closing test. Thirty-one multiple-choice items, a ten-card sorter and six corrections, each with a reason rather than a verdict.

  • Form: subject + am / is / are + going to + plain verb; negatives with not after part one; questions by moving part one to the front.
  • Use 1 — plans and intentions decided before the moment of speaking.
  • Use 2 — predictions read from evidence that is present at the moment of speaking.
  • The verb after going to never inflects: no -s, no -ing, no past form.
  • be going to versus the present continuous: not started yet versus already running.
