1️⃣ Grammar A2-12: one / ones
A2 learners can already build the sentence; what they cannot yet do is stop it sounding heavy. This material teaches one and ones as what they really are — the words that keep you from saying the same noun twice — and it opens by putting the long sentence and the short sentence side by side so the learner sees exactly what the short word is standing in for. Two rules carry the whole topic. The first is number: a plural noun takes ones, and shoes, socks, gloves and trousers take it every single time. The second is the one most courses skip: the noun has to be countable. A number test settles it in two seconds — put two in front and add -s — so that Which coffee? is answered with the strong coffee and never with the strong one. A four-step decision procedure and two worked examples show the reasoning, including one example that stops dead at step two. Shopping and choosing carry the practice: a Saturday market, a shoe stall, a fruit stall and a bookshop supply thirty-two scored multiple-choice items across four sets, a ten-noun sorter built on the number test, six commit-then-check cards, a tappable market scene and six sentences to repair. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, a three-object board move, and the honest note about a shop counting two coffees.
Lesson Plan
- The long sentence and the short sentence side by side, with the verdict
- The pattern strip: the + describing word + one
- The two rules of the topic stated once, at the top
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- the / this / that / which + describing word + one, for a single countable thing
- the / these / those / which + describing word + ones, for a plural countable noun
- No one or ones after an uncountable noun: the fresh bread, not the fresh one
- one stands alone after a verb when nothing describes it: Have you got one?
- a + describing word + one is correct; a one on its own never is
- ones never begins a phrase by itself: the ones with red laces
