📖 Lesson A2 Grammar📐 Grammar

⚖️ Grammar A2-4: Present simple vs present continuous

The A2 material that turns a guess into a procedure. It opens with one person in two pictures — Rafi works every Saturday, Rafi is working right now — then lays both tenses out in a single table, across not down: I, you, he, negatives, questions, short answers, and the time words that belong to each. The heart of the lesson is a four-question routine the learner can re-run on any sentence: is there a time word, is it true again and again, can you see it happening while you speak, and is the verb a state verb? Three worked examples walk that routine end to end, including one where the meaning says now and the answer is still the present simple. Two side-by-side comparisons resolve the contrast and each closes with a verdict, and a whole section is given to the exception that decides the topic: know, want, like, love, need, understand, hate and have when it means own never take the -ing form, in statements, negatives or questions — with the second job of have (have breakfast, have a shower) separated out so the rule does not look broken. Practice is heavy and spread: thirty-seven multiple-choice items across five sets, ten time words to sort into their tense, eight decide-then-tap verb cards, six real mistakes to repair, a marked-up market scene where every verb explains its own tense, and an eight-item test with no hints. Every single answer gives a reason, not a verdict. Teacher notes carry a 45-minute sequence, the line-and-circle board move, the state-verb rescue for a stuck learner, and the Cambridge A2 Key relevance.

  • Present simple: subject + verb (+ -s after he / she / it)
  • Present continuous: subject + am / is / are + verb-ing
  • Negatives and questions: doesn’t work / Does he work? vs isn’t working / Is he working?
  • Time words that decide the tense: every day, usually vs now, at the moment, Look!
  • Usual against temporary: Rafi usually sells apples, but today he is selling flowers.
  • State verbs (know, want, like, love, need, understand, hate, have = own) take no -ing
