📖 Lesson A1 Grammar📐 Grammar

🎹 Grammar A1-27: could / couldn’t

The yesterday twin of A1-14. This material teaches could and couldn’t to learners of about seven to ten, starting from the one sentence that makes the whole topic click: “When I was four I couldn’t read, but now I can.” It is built entirely on what the class already knows about can — one shape for every person, no s after he, she or it, and a bare verb behind it — so the only new work is the time. A then-and-now section with tap-to-explain marks, a ten-chip sorter that trains the ear for finished time words, and twenty-eight multiple-choice items spread over four sets carry the drilling; the second job of could, the softer request, gets its own short set with the Could I / Could you decision and the “Yes, of course” answer. Six typical errors close it, and every single answer explains itself in words simpler than the grammar being taught. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the timeline board move, the fix for a stuck learner and the follow-up topics.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • person + could + bare verb — I could swim, she could swim
  • could never changes and never takes an s: never “she coulds”
  • Negative: could + not = couldn’t, working on its own — never “didn’t could”
  • Question about before: Could you swim at five? — Yes, I could. / No, I couldn’t.
  • Finished time takes could; time that is happening takes can
  • Could you…? and Could I…? are a softer can, and they mean now — answer “Yes, of course.”
