🐱 Little Stars 16: Pets at Home

The opening lesson of the Animal Friends unit, built entirely around one small shock: English pets do not sound like the ones at home. A dog says “woof”, not “hav hav” and not “wau wau”; a bird says “tweet”, not “cik cik” or “piep”; and the fish says nothing at all. Every new word is therefore introduced sound first — the sound plays, the class shouts its guess in any language, and only then does the card show the animal and the English word. From there the chunk “It’s a (cat)!” travels through an action song (creep, wag, swim, flap), a sleepy-pets listening game where only the animal Pip calls may wake and make its sound, a feeding game that posts fish, bone, seed and worm cards into four animal boxes, and a colouring corner where every crayon stroke is paid for with an animal noise. Nothing is read and nothing is written: gesture and sound come before the word, the whole class answers before any individual, and no child is ever out of a game.
