📖 Lesson B2 Speaking🎓 Education

📊 Horizon: Baseline Talk 2.0

The sealed envelope from lesson five finally opens. Learners re-deliver their baseline talks under the same conditions — same topic, same two minutes, same four rubric bands — then sit delta conferences comparing September’s rubric with today’s. Along the way they learn the grammar of measured growth: past simple for the dated baseline, present perfect for the climb, used to for retired habits, and quantified comparisons that turn feelings into evidence. Everyone drafts the one-sentence growth line they will deliver in the Symposium closing speeches, and tells their family their delta tonight.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Growth lines use two time zones: past simple for the dated September baseline (In September I hesitated nine times), present perfect for change connected to now (Since then, I have cut that to two)
  • Since + a period reaching the present takes the present perfect, not the past simple: Since September I have halved my hesitations
  • used to + infinitive describes a past habit that has stopped: I used to translate every sentence in my head
  • Quantified comparison turns feelings into evidence: twice as many … as, half as many … as, three fewer hesitations than in September, climbed from two to four
