📖 Lesson B2 Reading🌍 World Around Us

🗞️ Horizon: Media Bias Basics

Fourth lesson of the register module: critical media reading. Learners run the two-headlines test on one event, hunt loaded words and their neutral swaps (slam → criticise, mob → crowd), decode headline grammar (present simple for past events, to-infinitive for the future, dropped articles) and expose the agentless passive that hides the doer. In the story, the crew’s own fundraiser makes the news twice — as “Teen mob brings chaos to market square” and “Young volunteers raise €412 for animal shelter” — and the highlighter hunt reveals that the bins the Herald blamed on teenagers were actually knocked over by a loose dog the passive voice erased.

auto_fix_high Grammar Points

  • Headline grammar: present simple reports past events (City wins funding), and articles and auxiliaries are dropped (Skate park saved)
  • The to-infinitive signals the future in headlines: Mayor to open stadium = the mayor will open it
  • The agentless passive can hide responsibility: Bins were overturned names no doer — always ask by whom?
  • Loaded verbs carry judgement while neutral verbs report: slam vs criticise, swarm vs gather
