🔧 Grammar B1-32: have something done
The causative material of the Fleydo B1 grammar series, set in the week before a family wedding. The opening pair is the whole lesson in two sentences: I cut my hair puts the scissors in your own hand; I had my hair cut hands them to a professional you arranged. The machine is taught as three fixed seats — have carries the tense, the thing sits in the middle, the past participle always comes last — and a full tense table shows the same wedding jobs running through present simple, continuous, past, present perfect, going to and modals, with negatives and questions, plus the two-haves note for I’ve just had it cut. A three-question decision routine (whose hands? thing in the middle? tense on have?) is walked through two worked runs, and the section-five lookalike takes the classic scramble apart: I had my hair cut against I had cut my hair, the past perfect in disguise. Get is taught as the informal twin with the same unbreakable order, and the bad-luck use — she had her veil crushed in the post, he had his wallet stolen — gets its own compare against the arranged reading. A 120-word tap-and-explain text follows Leah’s family through suit alterations, screen repairs, nail appointments and a postal disaster. Practice runs to thirty-one multiple-choice items in four sets, every answer explained, plus twelve sentences to sort into I-did-it-myself and I-arranged-it bins, six real learner errors to repair, three order-and-slot traps, and a note-box drawing the border with make and let. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the four-box board move, the finger-in-the-gap rescue for the past-perfect scramble, and Cambridge B1 Preliminary relevance.
Lesson Plan
- I cut my hair against I had my hair cut: whose hands did the work?
- The pattern strip: who arranged it + have + the thing + past participle
- The formula and the rule that the order is the meaning
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- have + thing + past participle: I had my hair cut — someone I arranged did it
- the tense lives on have: is having it fixed, had it fixed, has just had it checked, is going to have it delivered
- the order is the meaning: I had my hair cut (causative) vs I had cut my hair (past perfect)
- get + thing + past participle as the informal twin: Josh got his screen fixed
- the bad-luck use: she had her veil crushed, he had his wallet stolen — nothing arranged
- make / let take a person + base verb and are a different machine: Mum made me tidy my room
