🔮 Grammar A2-17: will / won’t
The form of will is the easiest in the whole A2 band — one word for every person, and a bare verb behind it — so this material spends five minutes on the shape of the sentence and the rest on meaning. Learners meet the four jobs will actually does in English, each with the signal that gives it away: a guess about the future, a decision made in the moment of speaking, an offer of help, and a promise. A four-question procedure turns those jobs into something a learner can re-derive instead of remember, worked examples show the procedure running, and a side-by-side comparison finally settles the offer-or-promise question that trips everybody. Then it drills: thirty-two multiple-choice items across four blocks, a ten-sentence sorter, six hidden-answer situation cards and six error corrections, all built around one morning at a school bike sale on Bramble Lane. It opens sublevel A2.2 and leads straight into A2-18, where will meets going to.
Lesson Plan
- One word moves a verb into the future and never changes shape
- The pattern strip: person + will + bare verb
- The three formulas: positive, negative and question
- Four jobs named up front: guess, decision, offer, promise
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- person + will + bare verb; will never takes -s and never takes to or -ing.
- The negative will not shortens to won’t, and only to won’t.
- Questions invert to Will + person + bare verb, and short answers keep the word will (Yes, I will. / No, I won’t.).
- will for a prediction: the speaker expects the future rather than causing it.
- I’ll for a decision made at the moment of speaking, and for offers and promises.
