⏪ Grammar A2-1: Past simple: consolidation
The opening material of the Fleydo A2 grammar series, written for learners of about eight to twelve who already met the past simple at A1 and now need the system behind it. It starts with the six -ed spelling rules in a single table and a four-step procedure for spelling any regular past form, then widens the irregular verbs from a handful to seven learnable families — no change, i to a, the o family, the -ought and -aught group, the -ew group, the short -t endings, and the daily verbs — with a twelve-verb sorting task on top. The centre of the material is the rule that A2 writing lives or dies by: did is itself the past of do, so once it is in the sentence the past is already marked and the main verb returns to its plain form. That rule is taught as a four-step procedure, shown in two worked examples, drilled in six commit-first cards and eight practice items, and then set against the verb be, which makes its own past and never borrows did. Practice runs across four multiple-choice sets, a tap-to-explain story, a sorter, six repairs and three trap boxes, and every single answer explains itself. Teacher notes give a minute-by-minute 45-minute sequence, the one board move that fixes the double past mark, what to do with a stuck learner and the Cambridge A2 Key relevance.
Lesson Plan
- Two pattern strips: verb + -ed, and a verb with its own past form
- The past form never changes for the person and never takes -s
- The time expressions that force a past verb
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- Regular past: verb + -ed, with the -e, consonant + y, vowel + y, doubling and -c spelling rules
- Irregular past forms in families: put / put, sing / sang, break / broke, buy / bought, know / knew, keep / kept
- The past form is the same for every person, and never takes an -s
- Negative: didn’t + plain verb — I didn’t go, never “I didn’t went”
- Question: Did + person + plain verb? — Did you see it? Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.
- be is the exception: was / were ask and refuse on their own and never take did
