🙋 Grammar A2-33: Subject questions

The thirty-third material of the Fleydo A2 grammar series, and the one that finally explains why Who broke the window? has no did in it. The learner is given a procedure rather than a feeling: find the verb, say the answer out loud as a full sentence, and watch where the name lands. In front of the verb means the question word is the doer, so nothing moves and no helper appears; after the verb means it is an ordinary object question, and do, does or did comes back with the plain verb behind it. The whole material is built on one minimal pair — Who called Ben? against Who did Ben call? — four identical words that two different people have to answer, shown with the answer sliding into the exact place the question word was standing in. Who, What, Which and How many are all covered as subjects, together with the third-person -s that a helperless present question has to carry on its own (Who lives here?), the plural exception after how many, questions with be, the single place a helper legitimately returns (Who didn’t bring a pen?), and the natural short answers Rosa did, Petra does, I do and Tariq is. Practice runs to four sets of eight, seven, eight and eight items, every one explaining its own answer, plus ten things-to-ask-about to sort, six reveal cards on short answers, six real errors to repair and four traps. A tap-and-explain scene about muddy footprints in a school corridor shows both question types alive in one conversation. Teacher notes give a 45-minute sequence, the cover-a-word board move, what to do with a stuck learner, why the double-marked Who did break it? sounds acceptable to learners, and the Cambridge A2 Key relevance.
