๐ Builders: Skim, Scan, Dive
A fully interactive B1.1 Word Lab lesson for teens that turns reading speed into a controllable tool. Learners begin with four warm-up questions about how they already change speed for menus, timetables and stories, then study the reading toolkit in two blocks: Three Speeds, Three Jobs (Skim ~60s for the gist, Scan ~90s for one exact fact, Dive slowly for full meaning and inference, shown as an ordered protocol) and When to Use Each Speed (a table matching each speed to real situations, plus a quick-reminder panel: purpose first, always in order). Ten key words (skim, scan, dive, gist, detail, fact, protocol, purpose, headline, keyword) appear with full B1 definitions and examples, and six become review flashcards. The reading, 'The Thursday Coders', is a 165-word practice article starring Priya and Sam with clear scannable facts (a year, a day, a number, a prize) and eight hover-tooltip words for the deep-dive stage. Practice offers eight fill-in-the-blank items on the speed names, key words and two facts from the article with hints and live scoring; speaking gives five 'choose your speed' prompts and a six-line model dialogue planning the protocol; the writing task is a 40โ70 word skim report with a four-point checklist and auto-saving counter; and an eight-question quiz mixes protocol knowledge with two reading-comprehension questions, per-question explanations, a result circle and localStorage persistence.
Lesson Plan
- 4 questions about reading menus, timetables, articles and poems at different speeds
- Silent thinking or pair-share format โ no writing required
Key Vocabulary
Grammar Points
- The three-speed protocol runs in order: skim, then scan, then dive
- Skim (~60s): read title, first lines and keywords to get the gist โ what the text is mainly about
- Scan (~90s): move the eyes quickly to find one exact fact (name, number, date) and ignore the rest
- Dive (slow): read every word, think, infer and read between the lines for full understanding
- Purpose first: decide your reason for reading before you choose a speed
- Match speed to task: skim to decide if a text is useful, scan for timetables and menus, dive for stories and instructions
