🏓 Horizon: Rebuttal Basics

Week two of Debate Club puts a taped line down the studio floor and turns disagreement into a rally. Learners see why a contradiction is not a rebuttal, practise the acknowledge–counter move with openers like “That may be true…”, and master the three grammar tools of concession — although + clause, however + new sentence, despite + noun — before rallying motions back and forth under the respect rules.

  • although / even though / while are subordinating conjunctions: they join two clauses in one sentence with a comma between them, and are never paired with but
  • however / nevertheless are linking adverbs: they start a new sentence (or follow a semicolon) and take a comma after them
  • despite / in spite of are prepositions followed by a noun or -ing form, never a full clause (use despite the fact that + clause instead)
  • The rebuttal move: acknowledge with a concession phrase (That may be true…), then counter with contrasting evidence (However, …)
